One of the busiest intersections in our town of Dixon has always been the corner of First and A streets. It was the main thoroughfare for travelers from Vacaville, Rio Vista and Sacramento in years gone by. Bud’s Pub & Grill and Catering sits on a very historic corner. In and around 1870, when most businesses were making the big move from Silveyville to the new town of Dixon, A. Kirby, a young pharmacist for W. A. Trafton, decided to reestablish himself in the new town and chose the southwest corner of First and A Street. The building was moved by huge rollers drawn by mules the distance of about three miles. The original building was of wood and was part of or adjoined by the I.O.O.F. Lodge Hall. In November of 1883, a great fire erupted on B Street and was swept by the north wind across town destroying the west half of the business section including the Kirby Drug Store. The I.O.O.F. Lodge rebuilt a two story brick structure on this location and the lower corner was leased to a saloon keeper. A photo, circa 1895, shows a corner view of the saloon with an advertisement for Buffalo Beer for 5¢.In 1922, shortly after Prohibition laws were being enforced, this corner was transformed into a grocery store. In 1928, the new grocers were Brewen, Coleman & Lucas. In 1931, the Corner Cafe opened for business with Joe Young in charge. He had come over from China at the age of 30 and had a restaurant in Davis. After his death a year later, his wife continued to operate the cafe until the business was purchased by Tom Wong in 1936.The establishment continued as the well-known Corner Cafe until it became known as Frank’s in 1969 under the guidance of Frank Fong. Several renovations occurred under the new proprietor and then, in 1980, Wally Munoz took over the business and made additional changes to include some weekend entertainment. However, Wally then sold the place back to Frank, who, along with his wife Rowena, continued a successful business until his death in 1995. His wife continued to operate the cafe until its sale to the present owners, Bud and Cherie Fanning, in January of 1996. It has been the Fannings goal to present an exterior and interior atmosphere of the 1890s–in fact, they were the first to recreate the 1890s look in the downtown area.
Bud’s Pub & Grill and Catering is a place of history and good taste!

The Cattlemen Behind Cattlemens.
The early 49ers brought fame and fortune to the Golden State, but the ranchers and farmers are the ones who fed and anchored it.
Pete Gillham Senior, the driving force behind Cattlemens, spent the first fifty years of his life on the ranches. He grew up on his father’s dude ranch in the foothills of the Catalina Mountains near Tucson, Arizona. After attending Stanford University in 1933, he returned to ranching, working on the “U Circle Ranch” near Oracle, Arizona, running 1,000 head of cattle. “It was the first ranch I owned, a nice little place. It’s where I cut my teeth on the business and, of course, Pete Junior was born there.” The 1940’s saw Pete expanding his knowledge of ranching and cattle, working on the Tanqueverde Ranch near Tucson and later managing the Petan Land and Cattle Company (formerly the YP Brand Ranch) near Elko, Nevada. “The YP was quite a spread. At 15,000 head it was one of the biggest outfits in the area.” As a partner in a feed lot and auction yard in Casa Grande, Arizona, he further refined his eye for the best in beef, returning to ranching in the 1950’s as a partner in the 3C Ranch near Ely, Nevada.
After many adventures and a lot of less-than-satisfactory restaurant meals, the two Petes decided they had spent enough years raising main courses and it was time to start cooking and serving them. They set about learning the restaurant business by working at Chuck’s Steak House in Los Altos, California. Pete doesn’t like to brag, but he does know a thing or two about beef. And having spent forty years on ranches he couldn’t help but pick up a few good habits – like working hard, speaking plain and eating good, fresh food. In 1968 they opened the first Cattlemens on the pier in Redondo Beach, California. Their philosophy was straightforward. Buy the best cuts of meat, the freshest vegetables, and serve them up simply, in generous portions. Today there are eight Cattlemens restaurants. Each location still ages and cuts its own beef and they still serve generous portions in a friendly atmosphere. The two Petes wouldn’t have it any other way.
Today Pete Jr. presides over eight Cattlemens restaurants. The decor in each restaurant is unique-comprised of local antiques and ranching artifacts, but you’ll find the same straightforward Western Hospitality and great food regardless of which Cattlemens you visit. Though Pete Sr. recently passed on, his legacy and kind spirit are still with us today, and a big part of who we are.
What Is Costco?
We are a membership warehouse club, dedicated to bringing our members the best possible prices on quality brand-name merchandise. With hundreds of locations worldwide, Costco provides a wide selection of merchandise, plus the convenience of specialty departments and exclusive member services, all designed to make your shopping experience a pleasurable one.
The History of Costco
The company’s first location, opened in 1976 under the Price Club name, was in a converted airplane hangar on Morena Boulevard in San Diego. Originally serving only small businesses, the company found it could achieve far greater buying clout by also serving a selected audience of non-business members. With that change, the growth of the warehouse club industry was off and running. In 1983, the first Costco warehouse location was opened in Seattle. Costco became the first company ever to grow from zero to $3 billion in sales in less than six years. When Costco and Price Club merged in 1993, the combined company, operating under the name PriceCostco, had 206 locations generating $16 billion in annual sales.
Our operating philosophy has been simple. Keep costs down and pass the savings on to our members. Our large membership base and tremendous buying power, combined with our never-ending quest for efficiency, result in the best possible prices for our members. Since resuming the Costco name in 1997, the company has grown worldwide with total sales in recent fiscal years exceeding $64 billion. In 1997 Jess Jones decided to plant his “test” vineyard on the family farm just
south of Dixon. He planted six varieties of wine grapes – Merlot, Cabernet
Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Zinfandel, Chardonnay, and Sangiovese – to see how each
would grow and produce wine grapes in his fertile soil with the cool delta climate.
He found that all six varieties did quite well here!
Although Jess sold most of his early grapes to other winemakers, his first wines
(Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon) were produced from his 2000 harvest. They
were a surprising success!
During all of these years, Jess has been studying winemaking at U.C. Davis and
attending various conferences and conventions. He began producing his own
